Photographed above is 2020 Vice-Chancellor Early Career Award recipient, Dr Rimante Ronto from Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences.
Dr Rimante Ronto is a dedicated lecturer within the Department of Health Systems and Populations. She has taught a variety of students from different backgrounds including international students whom, she has found, may struggle to find work due to a lack of knowledge of the public health system in Australia. Rimante, invites guest speakers currently working in public health to showcase the scope of public health work. Together with her students they review and analyse public health job advertisements highlighting their links to achieving unit learning outcomes. Finally, she encourages the regular utilisation of social media as an activity to engage students and help build their professional networks. Dr Rimante Ronto explains:
Drawing on my own personal experience from when I was an international student, I enthusiastically embrace challenges and provide transformative, professionally-focused learning experiences to create job ready graduates ready to fulfil their dream of improving people’s lives.
The Assessment Panel commended Rimante’s application as engaging, passionate, and inspiring and supported by a plethora of excellent evidence. The Panel acknowledged her initiatives as particularly noteworthy, such as the ‘Goose Chase’ for its gamification and the ‘Infographic Award’ (see across for examples of her students work) for being embedded with employability skills.
The Early Career Award recognises staff for their quality teaching and support of learning and the impact they have on influencing, motivating and inspiring students to learn.
